1st Home Run Of The Year – MLB Network

For those of you lucky enough to have your cable network carry this channel then I am sure that you are starting to catch the same addiction that I have latched onto!
I have to be honest, I am not sure why they launched on January 1st of this year. Their was not much content and their programming was very repetitive. I will give them this much though. For a person obsessed with baseball (like myself) it did fill a void that had existed since Brad Lidge recorded the last out of the 2008 World Series (how I still cringe at the fact that Philly won!).

One show that I have loved to watch since the beginning is the documentary titled “Ken Burn’s Baseball”. This documentary which is broken into 9 parts with each part appropriately titled “1st Inning”, “2nd inning” and so on, takes a real in-depth look at baseball and how it is truly a part of American History. For a person like myself who is 34 years old, I don’t remember much baseball before the 1980’s. This documentary brings alot to life for me. Everytime I get to see footage of Jackie Robinson playing or Mickey Mantle or even Joe Dimaggio playing, my wife catches me staring at the TV like a child in front of a toy store window. As a Met fan, sure you’ve seen footage of the ’69 World Series, but to see footage of other games from that season was amazing. There is so much content contained in the documentary that no matter how big of a fan you have been of the game, you will still be taken a back and be left with a new found appreciation for basbeall. Definitely a must see documentary if you have the time…each part is 2 hours in length!

Now that spring training is under way, their programming has picked up as there is obviously much more content out there. In addition to their weekly programs which have been very good, they have now started a series called “30 Teams In 30 Days”. What an excellent idea of programming is all I can say! In short every day they will broadcast for 1 hour from a different team’s spring training camp. This will take them right through the end of March, so you know that every day they will bring you something different!
To date they have already profiled the Red Sox, Twins, Yankees and Tigers. I have only gotten to see pieces of the Yankees one and I was able to see the Tigers one last night. They breakdown all of the off season moves and analyze how the moves will impact the upcoming season. They pretty much go position by position and analyze a team’s strength and weaknesses. They even go down on the farm and profile the farm system of the team to bring you up to speed and the up and coming prospects. I personally like this part of the show as of course…one can never have enough prospect talk!
